Welcome back! 40s, 50s, 60s

On any given weekend, high school classmates are gathering somewhere across the country to renew friendships and share memories. This weekend it's in Blakely.

But, this isn't your typical reunion. There will be over 600 classmates and spouses from classes spanning three decades - the 40s, 50s and 60s - gathering here this weekend for a "Great Reunion."

Former students from Blakely-Union, Kessler, Damascus, Washington, Carver, Jakin and Hilton will converge on Blakely to enjoy a reception and dinner Friday evening, dedications, skits and dancing from the 40s, 50s and 60s by members of each class Saturday.

"Who can forget the 40s, perhaps the greatest decade in American history, which brought the pride and patriotism of a world war, the birth of the baby boomers, big band music and movies like Casablanca," said reunion co-chair Priscilla Jones Collins, Blakely-Union Class of '57. "Or the golden era of the 50's with Elvis, Mickey Mantle and the hula hoop; and the 60's, a time of change, counter culture, the Beatles, a man on the moon and Star Trek."

"Early County is buzzing with excitement about this event, which so many local volunteers have worked hard to pull together," said co-chair Joan Puckett Wall, Blakely-Union Class of 1957.

Joining Wall and Collins as co-chairpersons of the reunion is Herbert Swords, Blakely-Union Class of '54.

Excursions are planned for the Early County Historical Museum, Coheelee Creek Bridge and Kolomoki Mounds State Park.

"We are thrilled that so many classmates will be attending the reunion," said Lisa Collins, proj- ect manager of Early County 2055, one of the sponsors of the event. "It is a time for remembering the past, celebrating the future of Early County, and learning about its compelling Economic Revitalization Initiative".

"We want the people who grew up and went to high school here in the 40s, 50s and 60s to know about the EC2055 initiative and the efforts underway that will create a healthy business climate for the community to support future generations," Collins said.

Also sponsoring the event is the Alexander Build-ing/Theatre Committee, a local group overseeing the funding for renovating the historical building into a multi-purpose structure.

Due to the overwhelming response, the Friday dinner location scheduled for 5:30 p.m. has been changed from the Cineplex on North Main to one of the storage warehouses at Early County Gin on Hwy. 62 East.

Saturdays' activities begin with registration at 9 a.m. at Mangham Auditorium followed by a program at 10 a.m. Lunch on the Courthouse Square will be available at 12:30 p.m.

Those who do not plan to attend the reception Friday evening may pick up their registration materials at 9 a.m. Saturday at Manghum Auditorium. For additional information call 229-723- 5191.
