Copper thieves nabbed Four local men are facing felony charges of theft by taking in connection with the rash of irrigation system copper thefts. The suspects were identified as Cedric Brackin, 19, Anthony Williams, 17, and Jemychal Salter, 17, all of Arlington, and Brandon Grier, 27, of Blakely. There have been 14 reports of irrigation systems being stripped of their copper wiring in Early County since December. Local authorities have been investigating 18 such thefts which have resulted in damages to each system reportedly between $6,000 and $9,000 each. The thefts are only netting the thieves between $300 and $400 from each system. Officers Mickey White, J.D. Murkerson and Tim Hardwick had been investigating the thefts. The officers got a break when a confidential informant identified the suspects. While the suspects have been charged in connection with two of the thefts, officers expect them to be linked with several other cases. Shoe prints at the scenes of the thefts and information from Dothan Recycling Service has been helpful in the investigation. Brackin and Salter each face two counts of felony theft by taking. Williams and Grier both face one count each.
Similar copper theft problems are being experienced across Southwest Georgia and the nation. Law enforcement authorities from a number of Southwest Georgia counties will meet in Bainbridge Friday to share information related to irrigation system thefts.
