Sumner named Young Ambassador

Chris Sumner
Chris Sumner, son of Chris and Sheila Sumner of Blakely and a senior at Early County High School, was named the 2008 Lions Young Ambassador for District 18-C at the Lions of Georgia District 18-C Convention March 1 in Moultrie.

Sumner was sponsored by the Early County LEO Club and the Blakely Lions Club in this event. He serves as the president of the Early County LEOs.

Lion dignitaries presented the Young Ambassador Award and the $500 District Lions Service Scholarship to Sumner. Following the awards, past international president Jim Ervin stated, "Chris is an outstanding example of what a Young Ambassador and high achieving student is. He has been active in all areas of service - school, church, community and to our fellowman. He is also an example of what our LEO Clubs can build in our young people."

Sumner also received a $500 Young Ambassador scholarship from the Blakely Lions Club. Sumner will now represent the Lions of 18-C at the state Lions Young Ambassador program at the Lions State Convention to be held in May.

The ECHS LEO Club was also recognized for its second "Club of Excellence" award from Lions Clubs International. The Early County LEOs were recognized for their outstanding service with local community projects as well as Lions' projects during the current LEO year. Acknowledgements were given to the LEOs for their participation in various events such as LEO / Lions service promotion, Southeast Guide Dogs sponsorship, Sight Night with the Georgia Lions Lighthouse, Thanksgiving and Christmas services, environmental services and conservation, youth leadership development, work assistance with the Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind, and Young Ambassador and Young Leaders program. The Early County LEO Club was recognized as the most productive and most active of all District 18-C LEO Clubs by the Lions leaders.

The Lions Young Ambassador of the 21st Century program was established to recognize youth for outstanding community service involvement, leadership accomplishments, public speaking skills and scholastic achievement. An active participant and leader in a variety of school, community and church services events, Sumner challenged the Lions "to meet the challenge for change and make a difference through what you do" and to become more involved in our commitment to serve others in our world.
