Blakely visited by heavy storms
March 24, 1998 WITH ROAD and bridge damage estimated at nearly $500,000, Early County was added to the list of counties in Georgia eligible for federal disaster assistance late Sunday evening. ART JR. AND SANDY Powell are proud to announce the birth of their son, Madison Parker Powell, born Feb. 22, 1998, at Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan. He weighed 7 pounds 15 ounces and was 20 1/2 inches long. MR. AND MRS. John Calvin Bruner Sr. will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with friends and family Sunday, March 29 at 2 p,.m. at the Bluffton Community House. 25 YEARS AGO March 24, 1983 MRS. DEBORAH McLendon of Blakely has recently been appointed sales representative and tour host for Wise Discovery Tours of Atlanta. TIM SHEFFIELD, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sheffield, has been selected for Duke University's Summer Residential Program for Verbally and Mathematically Precocious Youths. In the three years of the Duke Talent Identification Program, Tim is the only Early County student to achieve this honor. AUBURN University will hold commencement exercises March 17 for winter quarter. Graduates from this area include Charla B. Houston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Houston. 50 YEARS AGO March 27, 1958 LEE WALLER, son of Mr. and Mrs. D.E. Waller, of Blakely, will be doing his practice teaching at Coosa High School in Rome these next nine weeks. MRS. G.C. Spillers (nee Lorena Martin) of Tulsa, Okla., who is State Regent of Oklahoma Daughters of the American Revolution, will be the honored guest at a meeting of the Peter Early Chapter D.A.R. Thursday afternoon. MRS. MOLLIE SMITH, affectionately known as "Grandma Smith" to hundres of friends and relatives, was 102 years old this Sunday, March 23 but this fine old lady was unable to be present for the annual birthday party given in her honor at Kolomoki State Park. MR. AND MRS. Johnny Johnson announce the birth of a daughter, Ginger Katrine, March 13 at Baxley Clinic. MR. AND MRS. F.B. Martindale and children, of Statesboro, were weekend guests of relatives in Blakely. MISS MARTHA Irene Pritchett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lamar Pritchett, became the bride of Hubert Moore of Blakely and Del Rio, Texas, Wednesday afternoon, March 19 in the Blakely Baptist Church. MR. AND MRS. William M. Sheffield of Panama City, Fla., formerly of Blakely, announce the engagement of their daughter, Amanda, to Lieutenant Edmund Pierce Smart, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Smart, of Pensacola, Fla. 75 YEARS AGO March 23, 1933 BLAKELYWAS visited by a heavy wind, rain and hail storm Sunday afternoon and night. Total rainfall was 5.08 inches and considerable hail fell Sunday afternoon. MARTHA Collins, daughter of Mrs. B.R. Collins, of this city, has been elected president of the student body at Shorter College, Rome. MR. C.P. GAY is able to be out after an illness of several days. DICK Alexander came from Cochran, where he is attending school, and spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Alexander. 100 YEARS AGO March 26, 1908 TWO RESIDENCES on Cuthbert Street belonging to Mrs. Joe Hamil were destroyed by fire last Friday night. One was occupied by Mr. E.G. Jones and family and the other by Mr. Hamil and sisters. A CHARTER was granted to the Georgia, Alabama and Western Railroad Company last Saturday. The company proposes to build a railroad from Camilla to Fort Gaines. MR. C.L. McKissack has brought from Mr. M.C. Cobb the former Brunson residence on Liberty Street. MR. JAKE IVEY has returned to Blakely after several years in the Phillipines with the U.S. Army. MESSRS. J.G. Boyd and J.A. Fort have returned to Bartow, Fla. 125 YEARS AGO March 22, 1883 THE PUBLIC WELL needs attention. It should be in good order before court next week. THE LADIES of the Baptist Church have been canvasing the town this week for money with which to purchase an organ. THE WEATHER in February was unseasonably warm, but the equilibruim is being restored by unseasonably cool weather in March. MR. W.A. McDowell, chairman of the Street Committee, is showing that he feels an interest in his town by having the square cleaned off.
