Cleo Freeman Cleo McCorkle Freeman, 77, of Dothan died Sunday, March 9, 2008, at Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan. Mrs. Freeman was born in Miller County April 2, 1930, to the late Clarence McCorkle and Freddie Mae Johnson McCorkle. She became a licensed practical nurse from Moody Hospital in 1953. She was one of the first to graduate with a BSN from the University of Alabama in 1956. During that year, she also became a second lieutenant in Gov. George Wallace's personal militia. She received her master's degree in foundation of education in 1968. From 1957 to 1960 she was a nursing supervisor at Southeast Alabama Medical Center; from 1960 to 1969 she was the director of the LPN program at Wallace College. In 1969 she founded and directed the ADN program at Wallace College, continuing this until 1980. From 1980 to 1988 she served as the associate administrator over the nursing services at Southeast Alabama Medical Center. In 1972 she received a certificate in advanced study in health care from UAB. She served on the Alabama State Board of Nursing from 1975 to 1979. From 1993 to 2003 Mrs. Freeman worked part time at Extendicare Nursing and Rehab Center. She received several awards during her life, including nurse of the year for District Nurse's Association, Outstanding Educators of America twice, boss of the year from Business and Professional Women's Organization of Dothan and nurse of the year at Extendicare Health and Rehab Center. She was preceded in death by a brother, Sidney McCorkle; and a nephew, Audrey McCorkle. Survivors include her husband, Curtis Freeman of Dothan; one son, Harry Freeman of Dothan; two grandchildren, Ashley Trawick and Meghan Freeman; one great-grandchild, Christopher Noah Trawick; four nieces, Sheila Tiner, Teresa Lawson, Denise Snellgrove and Melanie Daniel. Funeral services were Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at 10 a.m. in the Ward Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Willie Parker and Tommy Wright officiating. A private family burial followed in Grier Cemetery in Hilton, Ga. Pallbearers were John Parks, Greg McGrady, Greg Bynum, Harry Grier and Robert Grier.
