Ferguson retiring

Pataula Judicial Circuit District Attorney Charles Ferguson has announced he is not seeking another term. He plans to retire Dec. 31 at the end of his current term.

Ferguson has served the eight-county Pataula Judicial Circuit for almost 31 years.

The 60-year-old native of Cuthbert earned a bachelor of arts degree in English at the University of Alabama in 1970 and received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Alabama Farrah School of Law in 1974.

He was a starting offensive guard his junior and senior years for the Crimson Tide under Paul "Bear" Bryant.

He was appointed District Attorney in 1978 following the death of John Irwin and elected later that year to fill the remainder of Mr. Irwin's unexpired term. He has held the office since.

During his years of service, seven Superior Court Judges have sat on the bench, including former Judges Walter I. Geer, Dell Bowen, Phillip Sheffield, Lowrey Stone, Tracy Moulton and current Judges Joe Bishop and Ronnie Joe Lane. He was named Georgia's District Attorney of the Year in 2003.

"I take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to the citizens, for the honor you have given me to be your District Attorney," Ferguson stated. "I will never forget those friendships made possible by holding this position.
