Rentz to be inducted into FHSA hall of fame

Aubrey Rentz
The News learned Monday that former Blakely Bobcat Aubrey Rentz has been selected for induction into the Florida High School Athletic Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will be April 6 in Gainesville, Fla.

Coach Rentz has been an icon in Freeport, Fla., since his coaching career began there in 1963. His contributions to the school and community were recognized in 1995 when the high school gym was named "Aubrey Rentz Gymnasium."

Following his retirement in 2003 Rentz was honored at a banquet of which Destin newspaper columnist Cal Powell noted, "Tonight, Freeport will honor the most important man in school history."

Rentz etched a spot in Bobcat history as a fullback for the Bobcats in the 1950s. He left Blakely after the 1955 season to play football at Troy State Teachers College.

Rentz plans to be in Blakely for the Great Reunion April 4 and 5. He and seven others will be honored during an induction ceremony and awards banquet April 6 at the Best Western Gateway Grand Hotel in Gainesville at 6 p.m.
