History really is alive!

When asked if he could revisit only one of the historical venues we had visited in Washington last week, grandson Allen thought a minute and said, "The White House."

Asked why, he said, "I'm afraid I might have missed something."

And, he was right! There was no way we could digest the historical significance of everything before us as we toured the White House last week. The same is true of the other sites we visited.

The National Newspaper Association business trip quickly turned into a fullblown sight-seeing trip when we called Allen to see if he could go with us.

"We're all going," Heather told her mother when Allen popped the question to his Mom. And the hastily planned venture could not have turned out better.

Somebody said we would do a lot of walking. Allen and Denise, Heather and Carl, and Judy and I have concluded that was an understatement.

However, we packed more into the three-day adventure than I could have imagined... Allen was the first visitor at the White House one morning, Courtney Allen from Sen. Isakson's office led us on an unbelievable tour of the Capitol, we saw the Declaration of Independence at the National Archives (Yes, Nicholas Cage did return it!), the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum, Arlington National Cemetery, the war memorials, the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and most points in between.

We were not able to spend enough time at any of them, however. And, we didn't scratch the surface.

There is much more to experience. I'll tell you about our return trip as soon as we get back!
