Warriors advance in state playoffs
By Paul Bridges Sports Writer

Both SGA basketball teams played against Valwood in the opening night of the 2008 GISA region 3AA basketball tournament Tuesday night at Andrew College in Cuthbert. These were elimination games with the winners advancing and the losers' season ending. The Lady Warriors started slow but kicked it into high gear in the third quarter and rolled over the Lady Valiants 47-27. The boys' game was similar with the Warriors using a big third quarter to distance themselves from the Valiants on their way to a 45-30 victory.

Kristi Williams had a huge night in this must-win game for the Lady Warriors. Williams poured in a game high 28 points and dominated in the paint all night. The Lady Warriors led 8-6 after one quarter and 18-12 at the half. SGA outscored Valwood 17-7 in the third quarter to go up 35-19 and coasted to victory from there.

Along with Williams' 28 points, Kyndal Andrews added nine, Ashley Tedder three, Lindsay Buckhalter, Morgan Hilton and Heather Grebel two points each.

In the boys' game, SGA started out playing sloppy and turning the ball over, but Valwood retured the favor by playing just as bad. The Warriors held an 8-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. Both teams played much better in the second quarter. SGA outscored Valwood 16-14 in the quarter to take a 24-18 halftime lead. SGA clamped down on Valwood in the third quarter holding the Valiants to a single basket while putting up 12 points of their own to take a commanding 36-20 lead. SGA extended their lead early in the fourth quarter to kill any hopes of a Valiant come back.

Michael Fincher and Blake Shepard led the Warriors with 13 and 10 points. Beau Clenney added eight, Miles Lee five, Jason Dean four, Drew Bridges three and Danny Doster two points.

Thursday night both SGA teams were matched up against the number one seeded teams in the region from Brookwood. The Lady Warriors played an outstanding ballgame but came up just short in losing to Brookwood 42-34. The Warriors also played well against a very good Brookwood team but ended up on the losing end as well, 68-51.

The Lady Warriors trailed Brookwood 11-8 after one quarter and 23-15 at the half. They made a strong comeback in the third quarter outscoring Brookwood 11-6 and trailed only 29-26. Brookwood played well and hit their shots late in the fourth quarter to secure their victory over the Lady Warriors.

Kristi Williams and Lindsay Buckhalter led the Lady Warriors with 14 and 10 points. Kyndal Andrews added six, Jodi Harris and Ashley Tedder two points each.

The boys' game saw SGA fall behind early. The Warriors only managed five first quarter points but put 12 up in the second quarter and only trailed 24-17 at halftime. It was a rough and tumble game. SGA stayed within 10-14 points of Brookwood in the second half until about three minutes to go in the game when a couple of technical fouls helped Brookwood put the SGA team away.

Michael Fincher scored 23 to pace the Warriors. Beau Clenney added 12, Miles Lee and Jason Dean five, Drew Bridges, Blake Shepard and Danny Doster two points each.

After losing to Brookwood, both SGA teams fell in the consolation games to determine the number three and number four seed for the state tournament.

The Lady Warriors faced Tiftarea. Tiftarea jumped out to a 17-9 first quarter lead and extended their lead to 33-16 at the half. SGA outscored Tiftarea 11- 6 in the third quarter but the Lady Warriors could not get anything going in the fourth period and Tiftarea won 57-30.

Kyndal Andrews led the Lady Warriors with 10 points. Kristi Williams and Ashley Tedder added eight, and Jodi Harris four points.

In the boys' game, the Warriors used a big fourth quarter to break open a close game and defeat the Randolph Southern Patriots, 54-39.

SGA jumped out to an early 10-5 first quarter lead and led 17-14 at the half. RSS outscored SGA 19-15 in the third quarter to take a one point lead, 33-32. SGA outscored RSS 22-6 in the final frame to secure the victory and the number three seed from the region in the state playoffs.

Blake Shepard and Michael Fincher led the Warriors with 15 and 14 points. Miles Lee added seven and Drew Bridges, Beau Clenney and Jason Dean six points each.

The Lady Warriors will play in the first round of the state tournament at Andrew College Wednesday night against Christian Heritage with tip-off set for 7 p.m. The Warriors will take to the court at Andrew College Thursday against Pinecrest at 4 p.m. A victory and the teams will advance to play at Middle Georgia College Friday but a loss will bring the season to an end.
