No recalled beef in local schools

According to the Georgia Department of Education and local school officials, Early County was not one of the 37 school systems which had bought beef subject to a USDA recall.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recalled 143 million pounds of beef Feb. 13 that originated at a California meat packing plant in California. Some of this meat was used for school nutrition programs around the country, including 37 school systems in Georgia.

The DOE notified school systems Monday of the recall and the proper procedures for destroying the beef.

Some of the beef in question has been consumed. But USDA officials stress that there is a very low risk of illness. There have been no reports of illness in Georgia school systems related to beef recall.
