Mumbles
A time to rekindle memories
Billy Fleming

If you have already read the front page article about John R. Harris, I hope you came away wanting to read his book - or read it again.

Sure, there are countless people out there, black and white, who defied the odds to make more out of their lives than anyone could have predicted. But, few positioned themselves in the community to have such an enormous positive impact on so many lives as did Mr. Harris.

If you are white, and as lucky as I was, there is at least one black person who made an enormous impact on your life. There were probably more than one. The one I have in mind was Eva Gilbert.

When she came to work it was easy to see that she carried her entire family on her shoulders. She gave them guidance and principle. She loved our kids and they loved her. She quickly became a part of our family, loved by all.

Eva was not very well educated, but she was a hard worker and had self respect. So much in fact, that she had refused to ever sign up for food stamps her family badly needed. It was one of the first things we made her do. She was the type of person for which the program was intended.

She was unselfish to a flaw. In fact, it led to her early death. Judy and I had been paying for her heart medicine for sometime only to learn when she had a serious stroke that she was buying her husband's heart medicine instead.

That stroke led to her death and a funeral that caused our family as much heartache as any other.

Brenda's column this week rekindles memories of the late Billy McFay. There were few dull moments around Mac. His dry wit and penny-pinching antics never ceased to amuse. The town's prestigious dry cleaner, his company had a policy that was contrary to his penny-pinching nature... "No additional charge for crushed buttons."
