Relay for Life set for April 11

Early County will have Relay for Life Friday, April 11 from 7 p.m. - 12 a.m. on Court Square. The event will celebrate local cancer survivors, honor those who lost their lives to cancer and raise money for continued cancer research.

Relay for Life will begin with the Opening and Survivor Ceremony at 7 p.m. A luminary service will start at 9 p.m. Entertainment for the evening will involve a team tug-of-war contest, the second annual No-Talent Talent Show, and the first annual Mr. Relay Spirit, a womanless beauty pageant.

Relay Teams

Local teams are busy fundraising. Be on the lookout for Relay fundraisers from these teams: Universal Blanchers, Georgia Pacific, Southwest Georgia Academy, Early County Elementary, Early County Middle, Early County High, Calhoun County Educators, First United Methodist Church, Wesley Chapel A.M.E., City of Blakely, Primary Care of Southwest Georgia, and Early Memorial/Blakely Medical.

Luminaries

This year Relay for Life will offer three ways to honor and commemorate loved ones who have battled or are currently battling cancer.

Living luminaries are being sold in honor of cancer survivors. For a $50 donation, a double knockout rosebush will be presented to the survivor, or their family, during the 9 p.m. luminaria service.

Tribute torches can be purchased in honor or memory of a loved one. Torches are $100 and will be lit during the 9 p.m. luminaria service.

Traditional luminaries are also available for $5. These luminaries will be placed around Court Square and lit during the luminaria service. Luminaries can be in honor or memory of a loved one.

Pre-purchase your living luminaria, tribute torch or traditional luminaria by contacting Sheila Sumner at 724-7595 or by picking up a luminaria order form from any team or at the ECHS front office. To ensure that your loved one is honored with a torch, rosebush, or luminaria, please order by April 7. Luminaries will be on sale the day of Relay.

Donations Businesses, churches, organizations or individuals who are not able to field a team are encouraged to make donations by contacting Cindy Conner or sending donations to Bank of Early, care of Kay Willis.

Levels of sponsorship range from $100 - $1500 and all sponsors will be recognized during the April 11 ceremony. Event sponsors are donors of $1500 or more; luminaria sponsors, $1000; survivor sponsors, $750; relay supporters, $500; circle of friends, $250; and relay helpers, $100.

Donation forms also be picked up from any team captain. Make checks payable to the American Cancer Society.

••• The next team captain and relay volunteer meeting is February 25 at 5:15 at First United Methodist Church. For more information regarding the 2008 Relay for Life, donations, teams or luminaries, contact Relay co-chair Dianne Harris at 723-8373.
