Let the Bible Speak
Recognize the power of speech
Robert Argersinger, Hentown Church of Christ

Words are powerful and can be used for tearing down or for building people up. (Proverbs 18:21). The writer of Proverbs informs us that the tongue has the power of destruction and life.

We need to watch our speech in order that we might not inflict harm, but rather encourage others. We must learn how to use the tongue as a source of life rather than one of discouragement.

Havoc and ruin come from an improper use of our speech. Untrue or insincere praise, known as flattery, is deceitful. (Proverbs 26:28).

Flattery, whether it hurts or soothes is that which seeks to manipulate another. One should not engage in such deceit. (Revelation 21:7). Gossip and slander also result in damage to another. (Proverbs 18:8).

Some pat others on the back in one instance, and then turn right around to talk behind their back. We must remember that whispering and backbiting are unfit works. (Romans 1:28- 31).

Life comes from properly using our speech. Encouraging words enable one to bring calm when there is strife. (Proverbs 12:25). When we are nervous or anxious a word of encouragement will often settle us down and make us glad. Kindness is a language that anyone can understand. (Proverbs 15:1). Quiet, gentle speech has been an effective way of preventing many harmful encounters. (Ephesians 4:32).

Let us determine to guard our speech, properly using our words to build others up, instead of tearing others apart. Being kind and helpful to others was the hallmark of Christ's life on earth.

In order to be pleasing to God and be saved one must obey the plan of salvation. (Romans 10:17; Hebrews 11:6; Luke 13:5; Acts 8:26- 40). Please obey the gospel today.
