Elsie Nesbit

Elsie Nesbit, 98, of Edison died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, at Calhoun Memorial Hospital in Arlington.

Mrs. Nesbit was born April 2, 1909, in Lee County, the daughter of George Albert Nesbit and Mary Ella Kersey Nesbit. She attended elementary school in Smithville and finished high school and junior college at Sparks College. She received her teaching certificate and associate degree from Georgia Southwestern College in 1929. She received a bachelors degree in Christian education at Scarritt College and a master of education degree from the University of Georgia. She earned a masters of school social work from the University of Indiana.

She began teaching at age 18 in Smithville, worked at the Wesley Community House in San Antonio, Texas, and was line supervisor at the Naval Ordinance Plant in Macon making fuses for several types of anti-aircraft missiles during WWII. She was ordained a deacon in the Methodist church.

She was hired as the first visiting teacher in Lee County. She later worked for the Georgia State Department of Education and was a full time professor at the University of Georgia until she retired in 1973. A scholarship in her name was established by the National Association of School Social Workers. The Georgia State Department of Education published two books she wrote about visiting teachers in Georgia.

As a member of the Athens Rock and Gem Club, she collected rocks and gems and designed jewelry, clocks and other collectibles.

Miss Nesbit (known as Aunt Elsie by most) moved to Edison in 1992 where she taught Sunday School at the Edison United Methodist Church and was a member of the Edison Garden Club and the Early-Calhoun- Clay chapter of the Georgia Retired Educators Association. She wrote the Nesbit Family History and enjoyed an active social life in Athens and Edison.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two brothers, Bill Nesbit of Leesburg and Albert Nesbit of Swanee, S.C.; and her two sisters, Mary Schwinn of Columbia, S.C., and Martha McLendon of Edison, and nephew Malcolm McLendon of Blakely.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews: Peggy Smith, Harmon McLendon, Betty Lindsey and Stevie McLendon of Edison and Charlotte McLendon of Blakely, Buddy Nesbit and wife Gloria of Smithville, Wilma Martin and husband Wayne of Cordele, Genie Adams of Steinhatchee, Fla., George Nesbit of Montana, Alice McGee and husband Steve of Greenville, Ala., Calvin Nesbit and wife Jane and David Nesbit and wife Brenda of South Carolina. Great-nieces and nephews include Brent Smith of Columbus, Brandy Floyd and husband Turner of Blakely, Clay McLendon and wife Jen of Jacksonville, Fla., Christina McLendon Davis and husband Trevor of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Ryan Brooks of Brooksville, Fla.

Funeral services were Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at 4 p.m. at Edison United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael DeFore officiating. Interment followed at Mars Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Buddy Nesbit, Harmon McLendon, Brent Smith, Turner Floyd, Clay McLendon, Trevor Davis and Ryan Brooks.

Manry-Jordan-Hodges Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
