George retires after 29 years

Lillie McCoy George started her job at the neighborhood service center in July 1978 as an aide, cook and van driver. Her duties included preparing and delivering lunches, starting the free-lunch program and delivering meals to clients in Arlington and Damascus.

She was promoted to the position of manager in 1995. Her duties were upgraded to setting up the Liheap program, implementing the emergency program, distribution of commodities, food bank, spiritual counseling and homeless referrals.

George was instrumental in organizing and teaching craft projects, such as, quilting, crocheting, designing Christmas wreaths, and organizing a red and white Valentine banquet for the clients and volunteer workers.

She says, "I have enjoyed my 29 years at the center and thanks to all employees and volunteers who assisted me in various capacities."
