Standifer seating to be upgraded

Bobcat fans and visitors will find new stadium seating at Standifer Field next fall. The Early County Board of Education approved a bid of $466,000 to be paid with SPLOST funds to upgrade the seating.

The new seating will meet all federal and state safety regulations and GHSA requirements for host sites.

The BOE also approved purchase of a new drivers ed car through driver's education grant funding. The $11,700 difference on trade-in with Thompson Motors was the chosen bid.

In other business, the BOE approved a position letter concerning tax reform proposed by Speaker Richardson. In the letter addressed to state representatives and senators, the board stated it supported comprehensive tax reform, but reform should come from a study by an appointed commission with a clear and unbiased understanding of the economic and governance impact new or revised taxes would have on the local community. Any tax reform effort should ensure adequate revenues, maintain local control, enhance the ability of local governments and boards of education to use local revenue sources to mitigate reliance on the property tax without eliminating the property tax, and be fair, simple and predictable."

A middle school baseball program was approved and Linda Commander, health occupations instructor, was granted a leave of absence for the remainder of the school year. Audrea Alyse Hudson as ECHS band director and Beatrice Bailey, bus driver were approved for employment.

The next regular meeting of the BOE is Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m.
