Council meeting

Opening the Jan. 8 city council meeting, Mayor Ric Hall and councilmen Andy Smith and Torre Mills were sworn in as re-elected officials.

The council held a public hearing to consider rezoning of property on North Church Street from agriculture to residential. The property was purchased by EC2055 and donated to Hammond Development Group for green space, a park and a detention pond.

During the council's regular meeting, approval was given to solicit bids for a new tractor and mower, and bids for a tax anticipation note for the city.

The public safety contract was approved after discussion. Councilmen Middleton and Smith voted to approve and councilmen Hutchins and Mills voted no. Mayor Hall broke the tie.

The council adopted a resolution approving an EIP grant which will fund a loan to Peanut Corporation of America for expansion of their plant on Highway 62 east. Approximately 30 new jobs are expected to be created by the expansion.

Councilman Middleton was appointed voting delegate for the city at GMA's January conference.

A resolution was adopted to allow the city to receive funds from the Hazardous Waste Trust Fund for work associated with the landfill.

Hillary Halford, who will assume duties as the chamber president Feb. 1, was appointed as public member on the RDC board and Councilman Torre Mills was appointed mayor pro tem.

The council also approved the zone change for the North Church Street property which was the subject of the public hearing preceding the council meeting.
