Mumbles The judge's ruling upholding the air permit for the power plant Friday was good news to most everyone in Early County and the surrounding area. I say "most" everyone because from day one there has been a small pocket of opposition in the Friends of the Chattahoochee bolstered by environmental activists. It's been almost seven years since the first article appeared on the front page informing readers that a company was interested in building a power plant in Early County. Judge Stephanie Howells' ruling was a giant step toward seeing the plant under construction. But, according to the opposition's spokespersons in Atlanta, and our own Bobby McLendon (FOC president), the fat lady hasn't sung, yet. And, I agree. Judge Howells is anything but the proverbial fat opera singer. To understand what I'm talking about, you need to read the 108-page final decision she filed Friday. "In the final analysis the weight of the evidence demonstrates that the limits imposed by EPD are reasonable and supported by law," Judge Howells states in her conclusion on page 107. To fully appreciate that statement you need to read the 106 previous pages. You will learn more about the complexity of the issues argued, and the detail to which they were argued during the hearings than you will ever know otherwise. Everyone needs to understand that there are going to be a lot of coal-fired power plants just like this one built across the country and here in the southeast. While the environmental activists would have you believe otherwise, the world we live in, the air we breath is cleaner today than it was was in the past. And it will continue to get cleaner as these plants are built.
