Holiday traffic report

Eleven people were killed on Georgia's highways over the Christmas holiday period, according to the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

None of those fatalities were in Early County or the four-county Georgia State Patrol district including Early, Seminole, Miller and Decatur counties, a GSP spokesman told the News Friday.

State officials had predicted as many as 25 people would be killed over the four-day Christmas holiday, which began at 6 p.m. Dec. 21, ended at midnight Christmas day.

There were crashes on state roadways during the holiday period. There were 3,877 crashes reported which resulted in 893 injuries.

The total last year was 1,107 injuries and 22 fatalities, the Georgia State Patrol said. There were 2,482 crashes last year.

Georgia officials warn that the travel period between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day is one of the most dangerous and deadly times to be on the road. Traffic crashes killed 139 people in Georgia last December and half of them did not have their seat belts on when they died.

State officials were predicting another 12 people could die on Georgia's roads over a 102-hour period during the New Year's holiday. Seven people were killed during the period leading up to and through the 2006 New Year's holiday.
