      It's 4:15 as I type this. That's 4:15 in the blessed a.m. I can't sleep. I hate it when I can't sleep. Sleep is good. When I can't sleep at night, I spend the next day walking around in a fog, hoping to find a comfortable spot to lie down and take a nap.

      At a large conference in England, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of empire building by George Bush. In the blink of an eye
      Writer Anne Lamott once commented that her son was born clutching one third of her brain in his hand. Grandchildren take the remaining two thirds when they come along. After spending a few days with Evan, I realized that the moment I walked in the door of his house, I was enclosed in the Evan bubble and he wouldn't let me out. It's not a bad place to be.

      This time, when you hear the phrase, "The check's in the mail," it's actually true. Thanks go to your elected officials, who decided a few months ago that the best way to boost a sagging economy (and buy votes during an election year) was to give taxpayers a rebate.
