THE 1998 Early County High School and Southwest Georgia Academy STAR students and teachers were honored last Thursday at the weekly meeting of the Blakely Rotary Club. Honorees were teachers Cheryl Helton and Henrinel Middleton and students, Justin Kennedy and Julie Jackson.

THE LADY Warriors brought home the state basketball championship trophy for 1998.

MR. AND MRS. Stephen Welch proudly announce the birth of their daughter Stephanie Alexis, born Nov. 16, 1997, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany. She weighed 7 pounds 6 ounces.

ABBY BROWN, the eightyear old daughter of Jeff and Melanie Brown, was crowned 1998 Tift County Little Miss Pine Seedling Queen.

TERRY L. Tedder, Early County Elementary School principal, was elected State President of the Georgia Association of Elementary Principals.

MERCER University has named Valerie Bush to the dean's list for the fall semester.

March 10, 1983

JODY GLASS captured Grand Champion with his 255 lb. Duroc Crossbred Gilt at the 1983 Early County Market Hog Show held Monday, March 7, at Moseley Livestock Yards.

MR AND MRS. Carlton Danny Hodges of Blakely proudly announce the birth of a baby girl, Lindsey Melissa. Lindsey weighed 8 pounds 6 ounces and was 20 inches long.

ARMY SGT. Patrick Murrell, son of Willlozia and Mollie Murrell of Blakely, has been awarded the Good Conduct Medal in Boeblington,West Germany.

BLAKELY was host this past week to three visitors from Israel who were in town visiting D.M. Carter Mfg. with an interest in acquiring machinery for processing peanuts. Representatives from three of Israel's Kibbutz (collective farms), Dan Peled, David Paciuk and Yair Ramraz were met by Herbert E. Sims on their first trip into the south.

March 13, 1958

THE EAST BOUND Sunday night mail dispatch has been restored, following a temporary layoff of several weeks. Postmaster J. Emory Houston has announced.

LION MEMBERS viewed a film on Georgia's wildlife program Tuesday at noon. The film was shown by Chief Ranger Steve Bush of Baker County. Two other rangers, R.L. Rooks of Miller County and Bill Hobbs of Early County, were present. The program was arranged by Lion Bob Durham. Alex Howell, president, presided over the meeting.

PRISCILLA Marshall, president of the Future Homemakers of America Chapter, was elected Saturday as Vice President of the State FHA Association, composed of approximately 23,000 girls in Georgia high schools.

MRS. JOHN Hudspeth announces the marriage of her daughter, Patricia, on Feb. 9, 1958, to James L. Helton, Jr., of Adaisville, Georgia.

MR. AND MRS. Frank Bridges and children, of Tallahassee, Fla., were visitors in Blakely Sunday.

March 9, 1933

A NATIONAL Banking Holiday to extend thru Thursday was proclaimed Sunday night by President Roosevelt. This step was taken to meet the financial crisis caused by numerous state banking holidays proclaimed by the governors of several states.

MAYOR C.R. Barksdale has been appointed by Governor Talmadge as an honorary member of the Georgia Bicentennial Commisson.

MR. VANCE LOYLESS is up from Miami, Fla., on a visit to relatives.

MISS DORIS Roberts has returned from a visit with her sister, Mrs. Hubert Maddox, of Rochelle, Ga.

March 13, 1908

THE BLAKELY Bobbin Company is a new enterprise soon to be launched in Blakely.

A BOY arrived at the home of DR. W.J. Jennings the past week and now he is honking his auto horn with more gusto.

MR. W.E. Hayes was selected to fill the unexpired term of D.B. Sherman on the Board of County Commissioners.

March 8, 1883

THE TOWN COUNCIL, under the direction of Mr. W.A. McDowell, is fixing up the street from the old tanyard and towards town.
