The Warriors tip off against Terrell Academy in Damascus to begin basketball season. The Warriors return to action Jan. 4 against Westwood.
SGA tipped off the 2007- 2008 basketball season last Monday night in Damascus against Terrell Academy. It was a tough opening night for SGA as Terrell swept both games from SGA. Both games went about the same way with SGA struggling early offensively, falling behind and not being able to overcome the deficit.

The Lady Warriors fell 53- 31 to a very talented Lady Eagle team. The Lady Eagles pressured the Lady Warriors all night forcing turnovers that led to easy baskets. SGA struggled to get their offense going and fell behind early, trailing 11- 3 after one quarter. The Lady Warriors played well in the second quarter getting six points from Kristi Williams and two points each from Lindsay Buckhalter and Brooke Hornsby. The Lady Warriors went to halftime trailing 13-23. Terrell pulled away in the second half outscoring SGA 17-11 in the third quarter and 14-7 in the final frame.

Kristi Williams led the Lady Warriors with 17 points.Williams was a force on the inside dominating the boards and blocking several shots. Ashley Tedder and Lindsay Buckhalter added five points and Jodi Harris and Brooke Hornsby had two points each.

In the boys' game, it was a tough start for new head coach Tyler Peck and the Warriors. SGA was ice cold from the field. It was like the basket had a lid on it and the lid was closed. SGA scored only 11 first half points and trailed 30-11 at halftime and trailed 43-17 after three quarters. Then it seemed someone opened the lid to the basket and the Warriors came roaring back. Michael Fincher scored 9 of his game-high 17 points and Drew Bridges hit three 3-pointers to help the Warriors score 24 points in the quarter. With another minute or two the Warriors might have pulled this one out but the game ended 49- 41 in Terrell's favor.

Michael Fincher led the Warriors scoring with 17 points. Drew Bridges added 9, Miles Lee and Blake Shepard 5, Jason Dean 3, and Danny Doster 2 points.

SGA traveled to Albany to play Sherwood Tuesday night. The Lady Warriors got their first win of the season defeating the Lady Eagles 43-19. Kristi Williams led the Lady Warriors to victory scoring as many points as the Sherwood girls could, 19. Williams again dominated play in the paint to help even the Lady Warriors record at 1-1.

The Warriors played the Eagles tough but came up on the short end of a 60-46 score. SGA grabbed the lead early with Michael Fincher hitting a couple of jump shots but Sherwood came back and took the lead 12-9 at the end of the first quarter. Sherwood extended their lead and led by about 10 points for the remainder of the game. The Warriors would fight back and cut the lead down to single digits only to have Sherwood hit a couple of 3-pointers and extend their lead back up. Sherwood hit 18-of-23 free throws to secure their win in the final quarter as the Warriors were forced to foul. Michael Fincher posted game high-scoring honors for SGA with 25 points.

SGA has already played Deerfield-Windsor in Damascus, Crisp Academy in Cordele,Westood in Camilla and played its final game before the Christmas break Tuesday in Damascus against Sherwood.

SGA resumes play Jan. 4 against Westwood and Jan. 8 against Randolph Southern in Damascus.
