City budget

The Blakely City Council approved its 2008 budget Dec. 4 at the council's final regular meeting of 2007. The $14,555,001 budget reflects a $434,000 increase over last year.

Capital expenses account for most of that increase including a new ditch witch, a new Tiger tractor/mower, a semi for the landfill and the methane gas project at the landfill. The city's share of that project alone is $342,000.

The 2008 budget also includes a 4 percent across the board pay increase for city employees.

The city's projected revenues for 2008 total $14,633,247, up approximately $512,255 over last year. Increases in revenue include reimbursement from the DOT for right of way mowing, improved software for handling landfill collections and $7,000 in additional ad valorem taxes. The city rolled back its millage rate from 4 mills to 3 mills for the coming year.
