Water, sewer rates going up
Water rates will increase $1 on the minimum rate and 50 cents per tier (1,000 gallons). Customers who use 2,001 to 3,000 gallons per month will see an increase from the current $17.41 per month to $18.91, a total of $1.50. Customers using 6,001 to 7,000 will see their bills increase from $23.05 to $26.55, a total of $3.50. Sewer rates will also be based on water consumption. The residential base rate remains at $10.00 with an increase of 50 cents per tier (1,000 gallons). The increase will help the city pay for upgrades at the wastewater treatment plant mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency. The city would have to raise the sewer and water rates to a base rate of $32 to apply for funding assistance on the project. The council chose instead to implement a smaller increase to generate enough revenue to make bond payments on the project. The council also approved a measure to cut garbage pickup for poly- cart customers to once per week. The move is expected to save the city $40,000 over the next 12 months. It will take effect the second week of January. Customers will be notified of their new pick up day. The new garbage pickup schedules can be found on page 17. In other business, the council approved the city's 2008 budget as presented to the council and approved a resolution urging the legislature to protect South Georgia's water resources. The resolution was presented by Bobby McLendon, who represented the Georgia Water Coalition. The council also approved the renewal of 22 alcoholic beverage licenses.
The next city council meeting is Jan. 8, 2008, 6 p.m. at the City Annex.
