Commissioners asked to adopt resolution

The Early County Commission met Monday night at the County Annex.

Leah Middleton, director of the Pataula Center for Children, addressed the commissioners and thanked them for support of the child advocacy center. The center, which serves abused children, is expected to be fully operational early next year. Middleton told the commissioners the center is funded solely through grants and donations.

Bobby McLendon also appeared before the commission representing the Georgia Water Coalition and asking the commissioners to adopt the coalition's resolution on management of state water resources. Chairman Richard Ward referenced a letter from the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia suggesting the ACCG not endorse the coalition's resolution as it read noting that some of the language was vague and could be interpreted differently and not necessarily consistent with the needs of localities.Ward said the commission needed to do a little more research, but was not discounting the need for concern in protecting the area's water resources.

Jerry Rogers thanked the commissioners for the county's support of Holidays on the Square. The event, held Dec. 1, was considered a success by the community.

The commission awarded Southern Triad of Bainbridge the contract to renovate the community health center pending resolution of budget issues. The $447,000 price tag is funded through a community block development grant.

The commissioners voted to continue participation in the regional transit program and to reapply for funding, which is handled by the RDC in Camilla and approved Charles Jenkins as the public representative for Early County on the RDC board, pending approval by the city.

Veteran's Day was approved as a county holiday in 2008 and alcoholic beverage license renewals were approved for the Log Cabin Restaurant, Dunlap's Country Store and Doc's Hideaway.

The commissioners accepted bids of $174,917 for a garbage truck and $85,570 for a dump truck from Beck Motors.

Commissioner Butch Wiggins suggested forming an ad hoc committee to study garbage collection issues in the county. His suggested committee members included EC 2055, the county, the leadership class and a representative from the city among others. Commissioners approved the suggestion.
