Clarification!
A discrepancy appeared in last week's article in the comparison of property taxes from last year to this year. It was brought to our attention that the $234,787 in additional taxes collected by the county over last year was much higher than the $34,34,271 reflected in the five-year digest and tax levy notice published in the Aug. 29 Early County News.
Tax commissioner Sylvia Hood explained that most of the discrepancy was due to the fact that a state "grant" rebating the mandated increases in homestead exemptions was included in the digest public notice figures, but did not appear in the tax bill totals in her digest summary.
She stated that last minute changes made to the digest by the state would have also affected the comparison figures.
