Blakely once had a bowl!
Mumbles

It's only a couple of weeks until the bowl season rolls around. The first one will be the Dec. 20 Poinsettia Bowl. (That's a flower, not a bird dog!)

By the time the national championship game rolls around Jan. 7 in New Orleans, you will have watched - at least could've watched - 27 bowl games.

Did you know Blakely once had a bowl game? It was the Toy Bowl played each November at Standifer Field during the early 1970s.

Each year the Blakely Lions Club and the Jaycees would suit up an play flag football to benefit the Empty Stocking Fund. The cost of admission was a new toy.

It was an interesting matchup. You had to be under 30 to be a member of the Jaycees. Me, Olin Thompson and Roger Davis were about the only ones in the Lions Club under 30 - the rest were over 40, most over 50!

Lonnie Chester, Joe Cannon, Thomas Harvey, Jack Sutton, Vince Hilliard, Stanley Houston, Marshall Day, John Hickox and Tige Pickle in the press box are a few that come to mind who suited up for the kids.

The series lasted only four seasons. The Blakely Lions Club holds a 4-0 record. In fact, those youngsters didn't score but one touchdown in those four years. Go figure!

Actually, the Lions had some very seasoned blocking up front and a couple of pretty good (ahem!) skill players in the backfield. And the playbook... I've watched a few teams this year that would've killed for it!

Gosh, that was a long time ago. I understand now why our old teammates had so many aches and pains - I just thought they were getting old.
