Museum holds grand opening and ribbon cutting

Museum volunteers, members of the Chamber of Commerce and Blakely Better Hometown gather for the museum ribbon cutting.
Friends of the museum, members of the Chamber of Commerce and the community gathered on North Main Tuesday, Nov. 13 for the ribbon cutting and open house at the Early County Museum.

"We've still got a lot to do," says Ruth Washington, "but we've come this far by faith." The museum has been a dream of local historians for decades and is the result of over a year's worth of hard work and memoriablia collecting.

"This is an incredible day for those who have been working towards a museum in Early County," said Susan Wiggins.

The museum hosts a large collection of items donated by local families and individuals. "Every time someone brings in something new, something we haven't seen before, its just exciting," says Tina Owen.

Items on display include numerous photos and school memorabilia, farm tools, medicinal jars, a canoe and Native American mural, war relics as well as furniture, clothing, bed, bath and kitchen items.

The gift shop and gallery hosts a wide variety of local artisans' work ranging from prints to wooden bowls to jewelry. "We are so pleased with the display of local artisans' work. We need to promote our artisans, they are very fine craftsmen who do wonderful work," stated Priscilla Perkins.

As part of the ribbon cutting ceremony, a speech written by the late Joe Cannon was read and the museum dedicated to his memory and in honor of his dreams of a museum in Early County.

"I would like to see a place that you could take your children or grandchilren and tell them that this is how Early County came to be the way it is. On display would be old farm implements, Indian artifacts, old automobiles, clothes, dolls, our part in the wars. Does this sound too big? Too much? It is for one person, but not for a community, not for the talent of this community."

The Early County Museum opens its doors to the public Tuesdays and Thursdays 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Sundays 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.
