BOE approves bids for new gym

New $6.3 million gym facility will be located on site of old baseball field
Construction is expected to get underway within the next 30 days on a 68,000 square foot facility that will house Early County High's new gymnasium and additional classrooms.

Anderson Construction Company was awarded the contract to build the facility by the Early County Board of Education at their Nov. 13 meeting. Anderson's bid was $6,324,000.

The new gym facility, which will replace the existing Hammock Gym built in 1954, was included on the list of projects for the 2002 ESPLOST referendum.

An additional $3.5 million being needed to complete those projects, which included debt payment, new classrooms and technology equipment, construction of the gym was placed on hold.

The balance of funds needed for the gym project was included in the E-SPLOST referendum approved by voters June 19 which is expected to raise $13 million.

The new gym will be built behind Mangham Auditorium on the site of the old baseball field. The old gym will be renovated for additional classrooms.
