Looking for answers I wish I had the answer for what happened to our Bobcats last Friday night over in Louisville. We played a good football team in Jefferson County, no doubt, but I did not think they were better than the Bobcats before the game and I left feeling the exact same way. The Warriors made two big plays and won the ballgame, it's as simple as that. Early County had more chances than it should have needed to win, but could not capitalize on any of them. The game was almost a carbon copy of the Thomasville loss, although I don't think the Bobcats played nearly as well against Jefferson as they did against the Bulldogs. As disappointed as we fans are, I can't imagine it compares to the frustration our players and coaches must feel. Fans show up to cheer on Friday nights but those guys have been working since June to win a championship. And after all that work in the hot Georgia sun, it all came to an end on a cold night in north Georgia. For twenty something guys Friday was the end of their football playing career. A lot of those guys either started or played a great deal for the last three years. I would like to take the time to thank them for their hard work and the three trips to the playoffs during their playing days. While I know that Friday's loss is still fresh on their memories, one day they will look back and see that they were one of the best classes to come through Early County. Nobody expected this team to go as far as it did. I remember most folks saying we lost too much from the 2006 squad. We got out of the gate with six straight wins and suddenly nobody remembered (myself included) that this was supposed to be a rebuilding year. Losing a game that was winnable to Fitzgerald did not dampen anybody's enthusiasm and the frustrating loss to Thomasville only made most of us Bobcat fans hope for a rematch. I guess that's why Friday's game caught me by surprise. I thought we were capable of making it back to the final four and maybe even winning the whole thing this year. But it was not meant to be.
If you see some of the young men around town, thank them for the eight wins and the trip to the playoffs. They represented our school and community well this year, and kept Early County on the tips of everyone who follows high school football closely in the state of Georgia.
