Water, sewer tap fees increase

At their meeting, the council approved an amendment to the city's mobile home ordinance which prevents a mobile home 15 years or older from being located or relocated within the city.

The council also approved an increase in water and sewer tap fees with water taps increasing from $200 to $400 for 3/4 inch; from $300 to $500 for 1-inch; and from $600 to $900 for 2-inch. Sewer tap fees will increase from $250 to $500 for a 4 inch tap and a 6 inch tap will be $750. The increase was requested to pay for the actual cost of providing the service.

The council also approved a standard charge of $30 to test electrical meters. In the past, the service was provided free to utility customers who felt their bills were too high and that there was a meter problem. The testing cost will be credited to the customer's billing account if the meter is found to be faulty.

The council also expanded the current central business district to include Liberty and Magnolia streets to Johnson Street, North Main Street to Butler Avenue, College Street to Jefferson Street to Westward Avenue to Robinson Avenue to Columbia Street to Church Street; and South Church Street to Perry Avenue to South Main Street.

A request by the sheriff's office for $12,282.20 from the Jail Construction and Staffing fund to cover 40 percent of the cost of a surveillance system for the jail building was not approved and referred to the public safety board for discussion and approval.

A beer license for U.S. Food Mart was approved and the council appointed Claire Moseley as chief registrar for the city with Doris Anderson and Ginger Jones as registrars.

A budget meeting was set for Nov. 28 at 6 p.m.
