City undertakes $6 million sewer improvement project

The Blakely City Council held a public hearing concerning upgrades to the city's sewage treatment plant prior to convening their Nov. 6 meeting at the City Annex.

Paul Simonton gave an overview of the project which is expected to cost $6 million. After looking at several options for sewage treatment upgrades, Simonton recommended upgrading the existing mechanical plant from its present capacity of 1.3 million gallons per day to 2 million gallons per day. The plan also includes dredging the city's two existing ponds to remove sludge and converting those ponds for other use.

Simonton said the cost per gallon to treat will decrease when the upgrade is completed. Preliminary work is now underway and the plant expansion is expected to begin in May 2008 and be completed by May 2009.
