Production agriculture class offered

Agriculture classes for production agriculture producers and Young Farmers will begin during the month of November. The first production agriculture class will be Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Early County Ag Center.

The subject for this class will be agriculture crops to be used in biofuels. The class will be taught by Brad Bucannon of the NESPAL Center which is located in Tifton. Bucannon will discuss possible crops that may be grown in our area that could be converted into biofuels. There is a tremendous amount of research being done on alternative fuels and sources of these fuels. This class will address a very timely subject that has national attention at this time.

A class will be held, with local cattle producers in mind, Nov. 30. Dr. Owsley from Auburn University will present the introduction to beef quality assurance. The need for good quality safe beef has gained much media attention in the last few weeks.

This class will equip cattle producers with the skills needed to produce a safer meat supply for the American consumer. This program will deal with issues such as cattle handling, injection sites, chemical residues, carcass evaluation, and over all herd health.

A follow-up class will be in March. The March class will be conducted with the use of the mobile lab and participants will visit three modules that deal with different aspects of quality beef production. Participants may become certified in quality beef production and issued a BQA certification number to help in the sale of their cattle.

Local producers will be sent reminders in the mail about the time, dates and subjects of the classes to be held. If you are interested in attending these classes, and do not receive a reminder, please contact Larry Worsley at 723-8206 or 723- 3006 to be placed on the mailing list.

The Adult Agriculture Education-Young Farmer Program is a state and national program that strives to provide quality education and leadership programs for local agricultural producers and agribusinesses.
