Warriors fall to Panthers in region play
The captains for SGA were Alex Wilson, Blake Shepard, Dustin Bowen and Alan Mock. The Warriors won the toss and deferred to the second half. SGA kicked off to Tift- Area to start the game and held the Panthers to a three and out. SGA failed to move the ball on their first possession but got a break when Drew Bridges' punt hit a Tift-Area player and Shepard recovered it for the Warriors at the Tift 35-yard line. Tift- Area took the ball right back, intercepting a Bridges pass on the first play. The SGA defense smothered the Panthers holding them to no yards on three plays forcing them to punt. SGA took over possession of the football and put together a seven-play, 75- yard drive to take the early lead. Alex Wilson scored the touchdown from one yard out and was the workhorse on the drive running for 47 yards on five carries. Will Brown added a 28 yard run on the drive. Chandler Ray kicked the extra point and SGA led 7-0 and seemed in control of the game at the 6:10 mark of the first quarter. SGA kicked off and held Tift-Area to three yards on two plays but Tift-Area connected on a 65-yard touchdown pass on third down but missed the extra point and cut SGA's lead to 7-6. On SGA's next possession, Bridges was hit while attempting to pass and fumbled the ball. The Panthers recovered at the SGA 25- yard line. Tift-Area needed only three plays to find the end zone and take the lead, 12-7. The Warrior defense just could not stop the Panthers as Tift-Area put together a 12-play, 75-yard drive to extend their lead to 19-7 at halftime. SGA received the kickoff to start the second half. Wilson ran for 21 yards on first down and picked up another 21 yards on a pass from Bridges. Bridges completed another pass to Miles Lee to pick up 25 more yards. Wilson powered it in for the touchdown from five yards out. Ray added the extra point and SGA cut Tift-Area's lead to 19-14. Once again the Warrior defense could not stop the Panthers as they answered SGA's score with a 90 yard, nine-play touchdown drive to make it a 26-14 game. SGA moved the ball out to the 48-yard line and on fourth down and 10 yards to go with 11:52 left in the game, the Warriors went for it but Bridges' pass fell incomplete. Tift-Area took over and five plays later extended their lead to 33-14. SGA kept fighting though. SGA turned the ball over on downs on their next possession at the 47-yard line but Danny Doster recovered a Panther fumble and the Warriors took over at their 15-yard line. Bridges hit Lee for a 65- yard gain on first down. On the next play Bridges passed 20 yards to Daniel Bayman who made a terrific catch in the corner of the end zone to score the touchdown. Ray kicked the extra point and cut the Panthers' lead to 33-21 with 5:06 left to play. SGA moved the ball to the Tift 15-yard line on their next possession but turned the ball over on downs with 3:16 left in the game. With SGA out of timeouts, Tift was able to run out the clock and secure their win. Drew Bridges completed 12 of 26 passes for 213 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Alex Wilson rushed for 108 yards on 18 carries. Will Brown added 49 yards on four carries.
The Warriors' record falls to 5-3 for the season. They travel to Valdosta Friday to play the Valwood Valiants. The Warriors must win this game to keep their playoff hopes alive.
