Nov. 6, 1997

EARLY County Sheriff Jimmie Murkerson, chairman of the Literacy Task Force, along with volunteers from the force and Blakely Rotary Club presented books to every third grader in the county at a special ceremony last week.

SUNNI Garcia, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Garcia of Donalsonville, was crowned SGA's 1997 homecoming queen last Friday in Damascus.

HENRY AND ANN Harrell of Edison are the proud grandparents of Emily Paige Hardin, born to Steve and Mary Anne Hardin of Ceiba, Puerto Rico, Oct. 16.

OWNERS of Nutritional Weight Loss, Lora Ann Sasnett and Debbie Jarrett, celebrated their opening with Mayor A.J. Gentry at ribbon cutting ceremonies held last Thursday.

Nov. 4, 1982

THE "LITTLE Miss Peanut" for 1983 is Brandy Pearson. The pretty, blueeyed blonde was selected from 24 of the cutest firstgraders in Early County. Brandy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Pearson. Runners-up were Lisa Atkinson and Melanie Enfinger.

MISS LAURA Lynn Davis was named Miss Early County this past week at the Early County Peanut Festival and Fair. She is the 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Davis. Runners-up were Lisa Easom and Cindy White.

MR. AND MRS. Donald M. McGriff of Headland, Ala., announce the engagement of their daughter, Sandra, to Mr. Ricky Langley of Blakely. The wedding will take place Dec. 11 at the Headland United Methodist Church.

MR. JIMMY Adams won a color television given away by Allied Department Store during their grand opening celebration.

Nov. 7, 1957

COUNTY Agent Dewey L. Maxwell has resigned his post here and has accepted a similar one in Bibb County, Macon.

THE BOARD OF County Commissioners met in regular monthly session on Tuesday.

DR. J.G. Standifer and D.H. McDowell, county historian, presented a portrait of Governor Peter Early, for whom the county was named, which the Board agreed to buy and hang in the Early County courtroom.

THE BLAKELY Bobcats are again champions of Region 1-B West. This is the third consecutive year they have copped this title, and came Friday night as they won their 26th regular season victory, downing the Seminole Indians of Donalsonville, 18 to 6.

THE WEEKLY auction sales at the Moseley barns grossed $15,726.15 Tuesday, when 83 head of cattle brought $5,328.59 and 393 hogs $10,397.56.

Nov. 3, 1932

THE ONE hundredth annual session of Bethel Baptist Association was held with the church in Edison the past week. A.L. Miller of Edison was reelected moderator.

6,312 BALES of cotton were ginned in Early County prior to Oct. 1 as compared to 11,440 bales the same date in 1931.

THE BOBCATS of Blakely High School trimmed the Richland High School eleven 42 to 0 the past Friday.

MR. AND MRS. Vinson H. Sutlive, of Thorsby, Ala., announce the birth of a son, Vinson Hutchin Sutlive Jr., Oct. 29.

MISS BARBARA Ainsworth was up from Tallahassee to spend the weekend with her father, Mr. H.R. Ainsworth.

THE PRESIDENTIAL election will be held next Tuesday. Herbert Hoover is the Republican candidate and Franklin D. Roosevelt the Democratic.

100 YEARS AGO

Nov. 7, 1907

POTATO digging has commenced in this vicinity.

DR. W.W. Calhoun of Bluffton was in the city Friday.

MR. R.A. McLendon of the Cuthbert district was a visitor in Blakely Wednesday.

MESSRS. R.L. Howell and J.W. Bridges have bought the property interests of Mr. A. Paulk lying along the railroad in the northeastern part of the city. Mr. Howell gets the part north of the railroad and Mr. Bridges the part on the south side.

MRS. C.T Alexander entertained the members of "The Unknown Club" at a Halloween party last Friday.

THE OLD Irwin-Bird- Thompson building on the square is being torn down, and thus another old landmark passes.

MR. ED BLACK Jr. and Miss Annie Adams were married at the Baptist pastorium last Sunday afternoon by the Rev. N.W. Hurst.

MR. C.E. Boyett has repurchased an interest in the Blakely Hardware and Furniture Co., and has gone back into active business.

Nov. 2, 1882

HON. B. Chancey left last Monday morning for Atlanta.

REV. T.H. Stout, whom many of us remember as pastor of the Blakely Baptist Church some years ago, now of Troy, Ala., preached at the Baptist Church last Sunday.

STONEWALL Jackson's little sorrel war horse is 27 years old and is being kindly cared for by a gentleman in North Carolina.

Married, on Thursday night of last week, at the home of the bride's father, were Mr. W.B. Deal and Miss Hattie Chancy.
