Museum prepares for grand opening

Artist Sarah Ann Murkerson works on the canoe mural in the Early County Museum. An artist for many years, Sarah is a museum volunteer. The canoe in the foreground was pulled from the mud of Spring Creek near Damascus by Nick Collins in August of 1986 during a drought. It was donated by Mr. Collins to the future museum and has been housed at Lucy Hilton Maddox Memorial Library for more than 20 years. The museum is now a reality.
As the Early County Museum gets ready to open its doors, the dugout canoe that was housed in the Maddox Memorial Library has been moved to the museum's buildings at 226 North Main Street.

The museum, originally a vision of Joe Cannon and Gerald Bruner, is in its final stages of preparation as the Nov. 13th grand opening approaches.

Housed in two buildings donated by Birdsong Peanut Company, hundreds of hours of hard work by the museum group, as well as generous donations from the Early County Historical Society and the citizens of Early County, has made Mr. Cannon's dream a reality.

The museum board has a number of fund-raising projects underway. A "Scenic Early County" coffee table book featuring the professional photography of Jerry Miller of Colquitt has been completed and sells for $35.

Mr. Miller also generously designed sets of note cards with Early County scenes for the museum. These sell for $15 for a box of eight. These fundraisers are designed specifically to appeal to Christmas shoppers.

Thursday night, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m., the premiere of the "Bringing It Home" DVD will take place in the Early County High School cafeteria. The two-hour movie tells the story of the 1964 State Championship Football team and includes footage of the play-off games as well as a tribute to Coach Ray Knight.

Tickets for the event are $12.50 and include dinner with the Hotdog Man. At the premiere, the DVD will sell for $40. Raw footage of the games will be available for $20 and the playbook (a printed play-by-play account of all the 1964 games) will sell for $10. Tickets may be purchase from any board member and are available from Four Seasons Flower and Gift Shop and the Blakely-Early County Chamber of Commerce. They may also be purchased at the door.

All proceeds will benefit the Early County Museum.
