All That's Fit to Print

Good news! Boiled peanuts are good for you. I'm not sure that matters one way or the other in these parts, but it might to some.

Researchers at Alabama A&M say that boiling peanuts brings out more than four times the phytochemicals in the peanuts. Phytochemicals have antioxidant powers that help protect against degenerative diseases like cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

I am now wondering if the researchers followed their mama's recipe for boiled peanuts or if they did it all scientifically with formulas and no salt. Either way, the good news is good eating is good for you. About time.

Speaking of good eating and about time, gator meat has a nice, sweet flavor. It's a lot like chicken only tougher. In Jacksonville Saturday, it was gator on the menu all afternoon. It's about time.

The only thing missing was Larry Munson. Winning is great, but it's memorable with Munson at the mike.

Tricks and treats have been the topic of some conversation in the last few days. When do we trick or treat? Today is Halloween and traditionally the day for trick or treating although I have known communities to celebrate on the day before if the holiday lands on a Sunday.

This year, it's on a Wednesday, which happens to be today. Put on those costumes, grab those bags and have at it. Remember to say thank you and watch for cars.

Even if you don't have a Bobcat, this week's special section "Here Come the Cats" is a treat. It not only celebrates the Bobcats of today, but also takes a look at Bobcat history and the history of the Band of Blue.

And, speaking of history, the folks involved with Early County's soon to be open museum have been putting in long hours getting ready for their big grand opening in November. I applaud their dedication to this project and to this community.

The group has worked hard to design great displays of the many historical items that local residents have donated to the museum's collection. I can't wait for opening day to see what local treasures will be on display.

My computer already thinks the time has changed. If I'm not mistaken, we do roll back the clocks this weekend and get our hour back from daylight savings time.

Even though I really can use that hour, I am dreading all the math. A broken button on my alarm clock prevents me from "changing" the time. Figuring out what time it is keeps my math skills marginal and gets me out of bed on time.

I could buy a new alarm clock, but where's the fun in that?

Which brings me to the ticking of the clock as North Georgia's water supply supposedly slips away. The press releases are dire, but in reality, no one is going to die of thirst. That's hype.

Personally, I think it's more about those beached pontoon boats on Lake Lanier. God bless the mussels and sturgeon.

Here's a novel idea! Well, maybe not. I'm beginning to sound like a broken record here, but when is someone going to wake up and try shifting Georgia's growth to where the resources are (that would be water, friendly people, water, communities hungry for a little growth, water, uncrowded roads, water, great quality of life, water, low cost of living, water, etc.).

You say we don't have enough qualified workers? You ever heard of the Pied Piper? There are hordes of people who would love to get out of Atlanta. They will follow the jobs. How do you think they got to Atlanta metro in the first place?

Long before the "water war" surfaced, State Representative Ralph Balkcom once told me... "They (read the powers in Atlanta) don't intend to allow any growth in Southwest Georgia. They intend to keep us dumb and happy because they know they are going to need our water."

If we drop our guard during the coming General Assembly they will end up getting our water, too!
