Bobcats post 21 points in third quarter
By Jay Palmer Sports Writer

Senior Mark Culpepper and the Bobcat special teams add another point toward Early's victory over Brooks County. The Cats take on Fitzgerald Friday night.
The Early County Bobcats exploded for 21 third quarter points Friday night at Standifer Field to put away an upset-minded Brooks Trojan team 35-14. The Bobcats improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in region 1- AA play. The Trojans fell to 2-4 and 2-2.

The Trojans took an early lead with an impressive 10 play, 70-yard drive against a tough Bobcat defense. Quarterback Jeremy Cody ran the option with great success on the drive, gaining 46 yards on 5 carries. Keith Christopher carried the last three plays of the drive and scored on a 1-yard touchdown run at the 9:43 mark of the second quarter. The point after failed to make the score 6-0.

Early answered right back though. After a good return of the ensuing kick off by Shawn Williams gave the Bobcats the football at the Trojan 46-yard line, Early County drove 46 yards in 8 plays. Adonis Lee scored from 3-yards out and Mark Culpepper added the extra point to give the Bobcats a 7-6 lead with 6:13 left to play in the first half. The Bobcats drove to the Trojan 12-yard line the next time they had the ball, but Culpepper came up short on a 29-yard field goal just before the end of the half.

Early County wasted no time extending their lead as the second half began. Quarterback Mike Perry hit Secore Wade with a long pass that covered 67 yards on the first play from scrimmage of the third quarter that gave the Bobcats a 14- 6 lead after Culpepper's extra point at the 11:38 mark of the third. Wade then recovered a Trojan fumble on their first play of the second half and returned it to the Brooks 13-yard line. The Trojans' defense stiffened though and the Bobcats turned the ball over on downs at the Brooks 10-yard line. But three plays later Wade gathered in a Brooks pass and returned the interception down to the Trojan 2-yard line. Lee scored on the next play to make the score 21-6 at the 8:39 mark of the third period.

The Trojans narrowed the gap after a Bobcat fumble of a punt gave them great field position at the Early County 17-yard line. Cody scored on the second play after the fumble and fullback Dominique Griffin added the 2-point conversion to make the score 21-14 at the 4:30 mark of the third period.

The Bobcats scored again on their next possession with an 8-play, 54-yard drive. Perry made the key play on the drive, rushing 22 yards on third and 13 for a big first down. Early also converted a fourth down by less than an inch to keep the scoring march going. The drive ended when Perry hit Williams with a 27-yard pass at the 1:34 mark of the third quarter. Culpepper's fourth extra point gave the Bobcats a 28-14 lead heading into the last period.

Brooks tried to make the game interesting in the last quarter, forcing a Bobcat fumble and the driving from their own 32-yard line to the Early County 17. The Trojans used a little trickery, successfully faking a punt that gave them a fresh set of downs at their 43- yard line. But the Bobcat defense was able to rise up and stop Christopher on fourth and short to end the drive.

The Bobcat offense put the icing on the cake two plays later. After a loss of 6 on first down, Perry hit Vintavious Stovall with a quick screen. The senior got several great blocks, including one from Caleb Freeman, and outran the Trojan defense for an 89- yard touchdown with just 2:10 left to play to make the final 35-14.

Early faces its toughest test of the year so far this Friday night at Standifer Field when they take on undefeated Fitzgerald at 7:30 P.M.
