City council sets ad valorem tax rate

The Blakely City Council set the city's ad valorem tax rate at 3 mils at a called meeting Sept. 26. The rate represents a rollback from 4 mils and will net the city approximately $311,771 in operating revenue, $6,900 over last year's ad valorem revenue.

The council held its regular meeting Oct. 2 at the City Annex and dispensed quickly with a short agenda.

The council approved a beer license for U.S. Food Mart and approved a change in the city's employee handbook concerning accrued sick leave limits.

The council approved providing flu shots for city employees.

The council also discussed a Georgia Public Service Commission survey of residential electrical rates in the state of Georgia. The council was pleased to see that Blakely's residential rates were among the 20 lowest cost electrical providers for residential customers.

The city clerk reported that preparation of next year's budget was underway and running smoothly.
