Recreation department named Agency of Year
District Three is composed of 32 agencies and covers over 14,000 square miles making it the largest Georgia Recreation and Parks Association district in the state. Chris Peace, Recreation Director for Blakely-Early County Recreation Department, was in attendance at the award ceremony in Cordele Wednesday to accept this award. The Agency of the Year title is awarded based on several criteria including programs offered and parks that are overseen. The Blakely-Early County Recreation Department was founded in January 1980 by several citizens wishing to create a unified department for all sports and leisure activities within the county. Since its creation in 1980, the department has grown to become a leader in its area with participants coming to Blakely to play the many different sports offered. Sports include basketball, baseball, softball, tee ball, flag football, cheerleading and soccer for youth and also softball for adults. The department also runs a summer camp for youth as well as a public swimming pool during the summer months. Northside Park, located on the north side of town, is composed of two adult softball fields and is currently where flag football, soccer and cheerleading are played. Howell Park has one little league field and two baseball fields where children eight years and under can play ball. The Bessie Scott gymnasium is located on the north side of town and summer camp, basketball and other activities are held in this facility. Washington Park, located across Howell Street from the Bessie Scott gymnasium, has a public basketball court, playground for children and is home to Washington Pool. Meadowbrook Park, located on Meadowbrook Drive, has six tennis courts with lights and is open to the public year round. The Ray Knight Sportsplex is located on Chancy Mill Road. Construction of Blakely's new sportsplex was funded through the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. The East Wheel, which has two little league baseball fields, a youth softball field and a high school baseball field, was opened in March 2007. Two new baseball/softball fields are currently under construction and will be opened in 2008. This new addition will make it possible for every baseball, softball and tee ball player to play at one location during the spring making it possible for a parent to watch each of their children play recreational sports. The department staff also spends time serving the community by hosting and helping with events such as the Hot Shot contest, area Golden Olympics and the Kolomoki Festival. The Department employs three full time staff and up to 35 part-time employees. Blakely-Early County Recreation Department is a member of the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association.
The Georgia Recreation and Park Association was formed in 1945 as a private, non-profit Institution to support and promote the recreation and park industries within the state of Georgia.
