SGA stumbles against Southland
By Paul Bridges Sports Writer

The SGA Warriors traveled to Americus Friday night to play the Southland Academy Raiders.

The Warriors were stepping up in classification playing the AAA Raiders and needed to play at their best to have a chance against them. The Warriors played well in the first half, especially on defense, and trailed only 12-7 at halftime. The Warriors could not get anything going in the second half and fell to the Raiders 30-7.

Drew Bridges, Michael Fincher and Beau Clenney were the captains for the Warriors. SGA won the coin toss and elected to kickoff to start the game.

On Southland's fourth play from scrimmage, Clenney pounced on a Raider fumble giving SGA the ball at the Southland 40-yard line.

Alex Wilson broke free for a 13-yard gain on first down. Will Brown shot up the middle for 24 yards on the next play. Wilson picked up 7 yards then gave SGA the early lead running it in for the touchdown from 6 yards out. Chandler Ray continued his excellent kicking, splitting the uprights with the extra point putting SGA up 7-0.

The game became a defensive struggle with Southland holding the field position advantage. Southland's next three possessions all started on the SGA side of the 50 yard line, but the Warriors held the Raiders to 3-and-out each time. Miles Lee, Blake Shepard,Wilson and Brown led the defensive effort for the Warriors.

Southland finally made the field position pay off scoring on a 13-play, 47- yard drive at the 8:23 mark of the second quarter. SGA blocked the extra point making the score 7-6.

Disaster struck the Warriors on the ensuing kick off. SGA fumbled the ball and the Raiders recovered at the Warrior 23-yard line. SGA backed Southland up to the 28, but on third down Southland completed a pass to score a touchdown and take the lead. The Raiders went for two but the Warriors held making the score 12-7.

SGA's offense mounted a nice drive on their next possession. SGA started at the 30-yard line. Wilson ran for 11 yards and Lee broke off runs of 9 and 31 yards to help the Warriors get deep inside the Raider's territory. On third down and four from the Southland 20-yard line Wilson ripped off 12 yards to give SGA a first and goal, but the refs threw yellow flags. The Warriors ended up turning the ball over on downs and the teams went into the locker room at halftime with the score 12-7.

The Warriors received the kickoff to start the second half but could not move the football and were forced to punt. Southland returned the punt to the SGA 15-yard line and two plays later upped their lead to 18-7.

SGA could not get anything going at all on offense in the second half.

The Warrior receivers were plagued with a terrible case of the drops and the running game was ineffective. This forced the defense to be on the field what seemed like the entire second half.

Southland wore down the defense and added a couple fourth quarter touchdowns to secure their 30-7 victory.

Miles Lee led the Warriors in rushing with 59 yards on 9 carries. Alex Wilson added 47 yards on 13 carries and Will Brown had 26 yards on 5 carries. Drew Bridges completed only 3 of 17 passes but had 9 passes dropped.

With the loss, the Warriors record falls to 4-1 on the season.

The Warriors will try to get back on the winning side of the ledger Friday night in Damascus when the Ashford Academy Falcons come calling.
