From our Files 10 YEARS AGO Oct. 9, 1997 JAMES H. Crowdis Jr., M.D. was presented a plaque of appreciation by Early Memorial Hospital and Nursing Home for his service as Chief of Staff. ARMY Pvt. Joshua P. Brady has entered basic military training at Fort Benning, Columbus. Brady is the son of Bill and Janis Brady of Cedar Springs. He is a 1997 graduate of Early County High School. ARMY NATIONAL Guard Pfc. Christopher B. Williams has graduated from basic military training and advanced individual training at the U.S. Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, Columbus. ROBERT T. Weeks was among his fellow students at Wallace Community College who completed course requirements and named as summer quarter graduates. WENDY P. Rachel of Damascus has been named to the Medical College of Georgia School of Allied Health Science dean's list for the summer quarter. 25 YEARS AGO Oct. 7, 1982 JOHN Holman, past president of the Blakely Rotary Club, was made a Paul Harris Fellow by a recent action of the club. The announcement and presentation was made at the past Friday meeting. BLAKELY Mayor Billy Fleming received notification this week from Gov. George Busbee that the City of Blakely has been selected to receive a $400,000 grant under the Community Developement Block Grant Program to improve public facilities. MRS. GINA Holman and Mrs. Margaret Talley opened the newly re-located Mini Gallery at King Plaza. MR. AND MRS. Dwight Evans of Blakely proudly announce the birth of a daughter, Mary Jo, born Sept. 15 at Flowers Hospital in Dothan. She weighed 7 pounds 5 1/2 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long. WAYNE R. Foster, weather observer, reported that precipitation was about normal for the month. The total amount for the year through September is 46.06 inches. 50 YEARS AGO Oct. 10, 1957 FRIDAY NIGHT in Sylvester, Coach Frank Buckner's lads extended their regular season victories to No. 22, knocking off the Worth County team 19 to 0. MR. AND MRS. Dick Bridges are on a vacation trip with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Rage Carroll, in Redwood Falls, Minn. MR. AND MRS. Donnie Phillips, of Atlanta, announce the birth of a son Oct. 3 at Crawford Long Hospital. Mrs. Phillips is the former Sandra Sheffield of Blakely. FRIENDS will be interested to know that John B. Duke III, who recently enlisted in the Navy, has been assigned to the U.S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill. MR. AND MRS. James Russell Mansfield, of Bluffton, announce the engagement of their daughter, Joan Greer, to Lt. James C. Keener of Chattanooga, Tenn. MR. SAM T. Glass was honored with a birthday dinner at his home on Sunday, Oct. 6, 1957. It was his fiftieth birthday. 75 YEARS AGO Oct. 6, 1932 THE BOBCATS of Blakely Hi scored an easy 50 to 0 victory over Alabama Secondary Agricultural School of Abbeville out at Woodlawn Park last Thursday afternoon. Blakely's line-up, Grimsley, le, Balkcom, lt, Hudspeth, lg, Grist, C, Puckett, rg, C. Duke, rt, Willis, re, W. Hayes, qb, Wiley, lhb, Williams, rhb, Holman, qb. C.C. LANE was elected foreman and C.L. Middleton clerk of the grand jury at the October term of Early Superior Court. THE HANDSOME twostory residence of Dr. C.T. Alexander and family, on South Main Street was damaged by fire, smoke and water early Tuesday moring. COLLIER GAY Jr. entertained his young friends at a birthday party Monday afternoon on the high school grounds. THE FAMILIAR faces of Judge Charles W. Worwill, Solictor B.T. Castellow and Stenographer Bussy are seen at the courthouse this week. DURING THE past week it was no uncommon sight to see crowds gathering around radios during the afternoons hearing the play-by-play detail of the world series baseball game. MR. AND MRS. Jack Alexander of the Blue Creek community announce the birth of a son on Friday night last. 100 YEARS AGO Oct. 10, 1907 THE JOINT debate between Judge James M. Griggs and Judge S.A. Roddenbury came off last Monday at the courthouse. LAST SUNDAY, Miss Ethal Hamil, of this city, and Mr. T.S. Tyson, of Damascus, were married by the Rev. Whitney Langston. MR. JACK STANDIFER left this week to enter the medical department of the University of Georgia. DR. E.E. Irwin left last Sunday to resume his studies at the Georgia Medical Electric College in Atlanta. JUDGE H.C. Fryer went up to Atlanta last Friday to attend the Georgia Postmasters Convention. MR. ROY Alexander is back from Birmingham. JUDGE W.C. Worrill convened early superior court here last Monday. Mr. J.C. Chancey was elected foreman of the grand jury. DR. W.J. Jennings, Mr. W.A. Hall and Dr. D.R. Deal have all received new automobiles. MESSRS. Sam Strong and John Ferrell were over from Ashford, Ala., last Sunday. 125 YEARS AGO Oct. 5, 1882 THE YELLOW FEVER record in Pensacola for September was 783 cases, 78 deaths. CHARLIE HARRIS says the mosquitoes are in great abundance and of huge dimensions in Spring Creek swamp.
THE TOWN Council has levied a tax of 3-10 of one percent to pay the expenses of running the town. (What a difference in 75 years.)
