The Festival's next Saturday

From tomahawk throwing to pontoon boat cruises, families will find the Kolomoki Festival at Kolomoki Mounds State Park a great way to spend the day. This event celebrates its 37th anniversary Oct. 13 at Kolomoki Mounds. Admission and parking is free.

Georgia-Pacific's Kolomoki Kids gives all ages a chance to try their hand at over a dozen arts and crafts projects. The make and take buffet of arts and crafts is free to participants.

"If you've never seen a bow or an arrowhead made, now's your chance," said Matt Bruner, Kolomoki's park manager. "We have people coming in who will demonstrate how Native Americans used weapons and how they made them." In addition, interpreters will demonstrate fabric arts, basket weaving, gourd craft and pottery. Visitors can also bring their own Indian artifacts for identification by Dr. Tom Pluckhan who has spent his career studying Kolomoki and its environs.

If the lakeside setting doesn't please most nature lovers, a live exhibit of things that creep and crawl will. Rangers from Florence State Marina will be on hand throughout the day sharing what they know about snakes and turtles indigenous to the area. Rangers will bring live examples of different species for an up-close look.

Visitors can get even closer to nature with a pontoon boat cruise around Lake Kolomoki led by a naturalist. Rangers from the game and fish division of Georgia's Department of Natural Resources will also be presenting programs on pond management throughout the day.

Festival goers can burn off a lunch of hamburgers, funnel cakes, curly fries and sausage dogs with a paddle boat ride on the lake or a walk up the hill to shop with arts, crafts and small antique dealers. Live entertainment throughout the day offers visitors a chance to sit a spell and tap their toes along with the dancers from A&A Dance Studio or sing along with Early County School System's talented students.

Bruner said he hopes everyone will come out for the festival. "It's a great time for us to thank the community for its support of the park and it's a great way to spend the day with friends and family."

Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but come early and spend the day. For more information about Kolomoki Festival, call Kolomoki Mounds State Park at 724-2150.
