Harmony Baptist Church calls Cowart as pastor

The members of Harmony Baptist Church, located on Love Street in Blakely, have called a new pastor. Jack C. Cowart and his wife, Kathleen, have already started their ministry in Blakely. The former pastor, Ira Carlisle, has become the pastor emeritus. Jack Cowart, a native of Colquitt, resides in Donalsonville at this time.

Cowart is not a stranger to Early County. He moved to Arlington in 1993 to serve as the pastor of Temple Baptist Church. While serving as its pastor the church had a great youth work, which reached many of the areas youth. While there they also started Temple Christian Academy. Temple Baptist was the first church in this area to have an AWANA program. Cowart served as an advisor to several of the area's AWANA missionaries and was a workshop leader in many of their conferences.

For several years the Cowart family were cast members of Swamp Gravy in Colquitt. Also, they started the Southwest Georgia Martial Arts Academy which had classes in Colquitt and Arlington. They hosted several karate tournaments in Arlington, Colquitt and Blakely.

Cowart was the first president of the Arlington Kiwanas Club and also served as the commander of the Thomas Williams Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp in Blakely.

"My ancestors were among the early settlers here in Early County. Zechariah Cowart (my grandfather seven generations ago) was the first road commissioner of Early County when Blakely was first established. My family is spread from Morgan and Arlington to Bluffton to Cowarts, Ala. and south of Bainbridge."

Cowart has been preaching at Harmony Baptist due to the illness of Carlisle for a couple of months. "I have the utmost respect for Pastor Carlisle. We have known each other for many years. He followed me as pastor at Temple Baptist Church in Arlington and he had a good work there. When he asked for me to come and help him here at Harmony I was more than happy to do so."

"We are looking forward to starting youth work, music and other ministries to reach out to the folks here in this area.We are an old fashion independent Baptist church with a desire to serve the Lord here in our community. The members of the Harmony Baptist Church extend an invitation to everyone to come and meet their new pastor. Sunday school is at 10 a.m.; Morning worship, 11 a.m.; and evening worship 6 p.m.
