State park launches Friends of Kolomoki

A new organization in the community - Friends of Kolomoki - is focused on promoting and preserving Kolomoki Mounds State Historic Park as well as supporting park programming and events.

Friends of Kolomoki, which is kicking off a membership campaign, is a chapter of Friends of Georgia State Parks.

Membership in Friends of Kolomoki offers more than an opportunity to support the local state park. Individual members get one annual ParkPass, a free visit for up to six people at any one historic site, discounts on gift shop purchases, a free round of golf or free night of camping and a ticket on the SAM Shortline Excursion Railroad.

Family memberships include two annual ParkPasses, one annual historic family pass, two rounds of golf or two nights of camping and two tickets on SAM. Individual memberships are $40 and family memberships are $60.

Kolomoki Park Manager Matt Bruner points out that joining Friends of Kolomoki offers real savings for members in addition to providing funds for local park projects. "For every Friends of Kolomoki membership, the

local chapter receives $10

towards local projects. In addition, the group receives a $750 seed grant from the state to kick off the chapter's organization," Bruner said.

The first major project for Friends of Kolomoki, in addition to a membership drive, is to support the annual Kolomoki Festival coming up Oct. 13 at the park. Membership funds as well as local donations to Friends of Kolomoki will fund the event and volunteers will assist park staff in festival operations.

Staff member Judy Moore reports that in addition to the entertainment and activities, 14 arts and crafts vendors and nine food vendors have signed up for this year's event. Vendor spaces are still available.
