Murkerson qualifies!
NASCAR HorsePower Tee Shot Tour

J. D. Murkerson may have hit the biggest drives of his long drive golfing career this weekend in Concord, North Carolina during the tryouts for the HorsePower Tee Shot Tour. The HorsePower Tee Shot Tour will be series of televised long drive competition events next year held during Nextel Cup race weeks featuring long drivers matched up with NASCAR drivers competing for $300,000 purse.

Four big name long drivers - Brooks Baldwin of Mendenhall, Miss., Kevin Bullard of Cedartown,Ga., Danny Luirette of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Vince Howell of Brentwood, California were named to compete in the "HorsePower Tee Shot Tour" when the event was announced.

Murkerson was among 36 long drivers from around the world invited to compete for the four remaining spots on the tour this past weekend at Cabarrus Country Club in Concord, N.C., just outside Charlotte.

"That was the most nerve-wracking thing I have ever participated in," Murkerson said Tuesday via phone on his way home.

He finished tied for third in the competition to earn his place on the tour. The other qualifiers were threetime world champion Sean Fister of Little Rock, Ark., 2002 world champion Carl Wolter and Steve Ionno of New Jersey.

In addition to qualifying for the HorsePower Tee Shot Tour, Murkerson had already qualified to compete in the Long Drivers of America (LDA) World Championship again this year. The competion will be Oct. 23-30 in Mesquite, Nev.
