Sept. 18, 1997

EARLY COUNTY voters cast their ballots Tuesday in favor of a Special Local Option Sales Tax. There were 915 votes cast, with 808 in favor and 107 voting no. ASHTON MCLAIN announces the birth of her baby sister, Macey Lynn. Macey was born June 26, 1997, at Flowers Hospital in Dothan. She weighed 6 pounds 10 ounces and was 20 inches long.

ROBERT R. McLendon IV, recently received notification from the Alabama State Board of Bar Examiners that he successfully passed the academic portion of the Alabama State Bar.

RONALD Moseley Still II and Olin Fletcher Thompson III of Blakely received their degrees from the University of Georgia at commencement exercises in Athens June 14.

STEVEN J. Manry, of Blakely, was among those students at Auburn University who were awarded their degrees during summer quarter commencement exercises at Beard-Evans Memorial Coliseum Aug. 29.

Sept. 16, 1982

FIRST Baptist Church extends formal welcome to B. Steven Williams who has recently come to serve the church as Minister of Music and Youth. Steve and his wife Joyce come to Blakely from Hillcrest Baptist Church in Enterprise, Ala.

MR. AND MRS. Donald L. Holman of Sharpsville, Ind., announce the engagement of their daughter, Tamara Lee, to James Robert Cannon of Blakely.

DR. AND MRS. Alex Howell Jr. proudly announce the birth of a 7 pound 7 ounce boy, Jefferson Alexander Howell. He was born Aug. 28, 1982, at Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan.

50 YEARS AGO

Sept. 19, 1957

EARLY County has turned its two remaining covered bridges over to the Peter Early Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for care and preservation.

COACH FRANK Buckner unveiled his 1957 Bobcat machine in Cuthbert the past Friday night before a large and appreciative, but critical audience, downing Cuthbert 14 to 0.

MRS. J.H. MOYE returned Saturday from her summer vacation to Tennessee. While there she visited relatives in Winchester and Nashville.

COACH FRANK Buckner of Blakely-Union High School was the speaker at last week's meeting of the Blakely Rotary Club.

MISS PATRICIA Davis, who has been working in Atlanta, spent a week here with her parents before continuing her education at the University of Georgia.

LT. AND MRS. Herman West and children spent the weekend in Blakely en route from Arkansas to West Palm Beach, Fla. Mrs. West is the former Miss Patricia Robinson.

SGT. GRANTLAND Lindsey and family returned from north Africa, where Sgt. Lindsey was on duty with the Air Force.

75 YEARS AGO

Sept. 15, 1932

EUGENE TALMADGE was elected governor, Richard B. Russell senator, R.A. Patterson solicitor of superior court and F.B. Melton representative in Wednesday's state primary.

MR.AND MRS. Joe Hamil have returned to their home in Panama City, Fla., after a visit with the family of Mrs. Clara Butler.

EDWIN BARHAM left Monday for Cambridge, Mass., where he will enter law school at Harvard University. Edwin recently received his degree at the University of Georgia.

EDGAR KELLEY Jr. is attending school at Tifton this year.

MR. AND MRS. H.M. Haynes have returned to Blakely to make their home after a stay of a year or more in Tallahassee, Fla.

MISS NELL KING left Tuesday for Forsyth, Ga., where she will enter Bessie Tift College.

MR. W.W. BEARD, of Milledgeville, is spending several days in the city this week.

Sept. 21, 1907

MISS GERTRUDE McKinnon and Mr. B.M. Ward were married out at Flowers Mill last Sunday, Rev. N.W. Hurst officiating.

DR. W.B. Standifer returned Wednesday from Atlanta, where he went to enter his daughter, Miss Rebe, in Agnes Scott College in Decatur.

THE CITY Council, after finding the taxable property of the city had increased to $1,568,075.75, fixed the tax rate at 7 mills.

MRS. T.M. Howard has returned from a visit to Atlanta.

A BEAUTIFUL new organ has just been placed n Langston's Chapel.

MR. JOHNNY Williams returned recently from Geneva, Ala.

125 YEARS AGO

Sept. 14, 1882

A SEA GULL was seen in Blakely Sunday morning. It doubtless came by way of the wind and storm of Pensacola, which is reported to be the severest ever experienced there.

THE Confederate flag pole leans a little since the storm. Straighten it up. It is now about 21 years and four months old.

ON SATURDAY night last, the severest rain and wind storm known since 1856 visited this section. Damage to crops, roads, bridges and mill dams was terrific. The Chattahoochee is out of its banks and the Flint is reported a mile wide at Albany.
