Vickers receives Georgia Power grant
In this program, nominations are received from each of the public colleges and universities in Georgia that have schools of education. Each candidate has to be in the top 25 percent of their class academically, has to be a first-year teacher currently employed by a public school in the state of Georgia, and has to have shown high aptitude for teaching. Albany State University submitted Vickers as one of their top graduates. The purpose of the grant is to encourage some of the best and brightest new teachers by helping them purchase additional materials and supplies for use in their classroom beyond those provided by their school. This grant should in no way decrease the funding they receive from their school district, but is a supplement to help them as they start their career in teaching. The checks will, however, be made out to the school so that the individual teacher will not be taxed. with the funds earmarked for use by the recipent. An awards luncheon will be held Saturday, Oct. 13 at 11:30 a.m. at the Georgia Power Corporate Head-quarters in Atlanta. Each recipient, their immediate family, the dean of the school that nominated them and each principal and superintendent will be invited to to attend.
The former Bobcat graduated with a bachelor's degree in special education from Albany State University. Her husband, Mike Vickers, is employed with Georgia-Pacific.
