James S. Tardy
Retired Lt. Col. James Spottswood Tardy, 74, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007. A native of Lexington, Va., and son of the late Harry J. Tardy and Virginia N. Tardy, he lived in Athens from 1977 to present. Tardy graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.S. in education in 1957 and was a member of the Athens First Baptist Church. He served his country for more than 24 years in the United States Marine Corps, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam, assignments with all three regular Marine divisions, two tours of duty at Quantico, Va., a tour in Albany, and a tour at Headquarters Marine Corps in Washington, D.C. His military decorations include three Bronze Star Medals with Combat V and Gold Star, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, a Presidential Unit Citation, two Navy Unit Citations, two Vietnamese Service Medals, and a National Defense Service Medal. After retiring from the Marines, Tardy managed the traffic safety/parking services department at the University of Georgia for 18 years. One of his passions was working with youth where he coached numerous sports teams and led fundraising initiatives in their support. His sister, Theresa Ann, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Claire S. Tardy of Athens; son and daughterin law, James S. Tardy, Jr. and Mauri P. Tardy and their children, Hollis and James of Dallas, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Robert M. Tardy and Kim B. Tardy and their children, Montgomery, Peyton and Bailey of Atlanta; and daughter and son-in-law, Robin Tardy Ginn and Franklin J. Ginn and their children, Catherine and Stephen of Royston, Ga. Funeral services were Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Athens First Baptist Church with Dr. Jon Appleton officiating. Interment followed at Evergreen Memorial Park.
