BOBCATS @ BAINBRIDGE Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

The Early County Bobcats open the 2007 football season Friday night against the Bainbridge High Bearcats. Kick off in Bainbridge is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Bobcats are one of the preseason favorites in region 1-AA and return 17 players who either started or played a great deal on last year's 11-3 squad which made it to the state semi-finals before falling to eventual state co-champion Charlton County 15-6 at the Georgia Dome.

"We have a good nucleus returning," head coach Trey Woolf said, "But we lost some good players from last year and we probably aren't as deep as we were last year, overall."

The defense should be a strong point for the Bobcats in 2007. Early County returns half of the defense that came into its own in the playoffs. Latavious Davis, Robert Worlds and Jamarcus Backey all return on the defensive line.Walt Lightsey and T.J. Brown are fighting for the other spot on the defensive line. Caleb Freeman is Davis' back up and Nathan Trawick will also play some on the defensive front. "We have experience up front and we expect those guys to play well," Coach Woolf said.

The linebacking corp should also be a strong point. The Bobcats lost two of the four starters, but return Anthony Williams and Demetrius Cody for their senior campaigns. They will be joined in the starting rotation by Tim Tinson and Kodell Collier. Collier played a great deal in 2006. Brashard Taylor, Kajuane Freeman and Calvin Hicks will also play some at linebacker for the Bobcats.

The secondary is a completely new group. Shawn Williams, who started at linebacker last year, has been moved to safety. Secore Wade, who played extensively last year, will start at one corner, while Nick Holmes will play the other. Tracy Anthony and Neko Wimberly will also see playing time in the secondary.

"I feel like our defense could be a good unit. We have a mixture of experience and new guys who have not played a whole lot. If we stay healthy they could be a good group." Coach Woolf said.

The offense will see several new faces in 2007. The unit graduated players that accounted for over 90 percent of the unit's output in 2006. "We will still run the same offense that we did last year. We think this group will improve week to week and get better as the year goes along," Coach Woolf stated.

Mike Perry will get the nod at quarterback. He will be backed up by Secore Wade and T.J. Allen. Perry will be joined in the backfield by returning starter Neko Wimberly at fullback. Adonis Lee will be the halfback. Anthony Williams will back up Wimberly and Demetrius Cody will back up Lee. Freeman will also see some playing time at running back.

Dionis Bryant and Tracy Anthony return at the receiver positions. Shawn Williams will be the tight end. Vintavious Stovall and Nick Holmes will also play some at wide out.Wade will back up Williams at tight end.

The offensive line will be three seniors and two sophomores. Josh Storey returns to start at center. Nathan Trawick returns to start at left tackle. Brandon Webb will play left guard. Kaylon Harrell will start at right tackle and Jordan Heath will start at right guard. Worlds, Lightsey, Caleb Freeman, Brown and Davis will also play on the offensive line.

The kicking game chores will be handled by a couple of seniors. Mark Culpepper will kick extra points and field goals. Anthony Williams will kick off and punt.Webb and Harrell will be the long snappers.

"We are excited about getting started." Woolf said. "These guys have worked hard to get ready. If we are going to be successful they'll have to continue to work hard and get better every week. Hopefully, we will get better every week and be in a position to be in the thick of things in our region at the end."
